Church Coalition Planned for Columbus: July 15-17

The second National Gathering of the United Church Coalition for Lesbian/Gay Concerns will be held July 15-17 in Columbus. This event will bring together clergy and lay persons of all sexual orientations who are committed to the struggle for lesbian/gay rights within the United Church of Christ and throughout society.

"We hope to build a community of support and to challenge each other to remain involved in issues that affect us all," eaxplains the promotional brochure. "We will have time to share our stories with each other in small groups, listen to speakers, worship, participate in workshops, play and enjoy free time."

Participating in the conference will be Rev. William Johnson and Rev. Susan Savell, two openly gay UCC ministers who are committed to full participation of gays and lesbians in the church. July 15 at 7:00 p.m., they will give evening presentations, open to the public. Rev. Johnson will speak on the topic, "A Theology for Lesbian/Gay Liberation," and Rev. Savell will address the topic, "Turning Curses Into Blessings: Gifts of Lesbians and Gay Men to the Church."

Workshops at the National Gathering will be offered in these and other areas:

• Coming out in a Christian context • Surviving in the closet

• Consciousness-raising in the local church and community

• Lesbian/Gay contributions to theology and the church

• Strategies for UCC General Synod 14 Location for the event is the United Christian Center, 66 East 15th Ave., on the Ohio State University campus.
